Have you ever wondered how cultures of the East and West (mis)perceive each other’s values? If you understood these differences in perspective, might you be in a better position to share God’s story with someone from another culture? Well, click on the image below to check out an infographic from the folks at honorshame.com. You can also click here for a more detailed explanation and a hi-res download.
Have you ever considered that the Western church usually presents the Gospel in terms of forgiveness through the removal of guilt, but people in the Majority World tend to seek honor or spiritual power? If we are to be effective Kingdom ambassadors in today’s globalized world, Christians need to understand and communicate a three-dimensional gospel that speaks to all of these perspectives.
So, we wanted to let you know about an upcoming event that might help fit out your tool kit in new ways. Our friends at Eternity Bible College will be hosting a special evening conference with keynote speaker Jayson Georges. Jayson is the founding editor of www.HonorShame.com, and has also authored a solid resource on this subject, “The 3D Gospel: Ministering in Guilt, Shame and Fear Cultures”.
The conference will be held on May 13, 2017, from 5-9 pm in Simi Valley, CA. For more information or to register, check out www.eternitybiblecollege.com/3Dgospel
Here’s another tool from the folks over at honorshame.com. It’s called The Culture Test, and it’s a free, 5 minute assessment tool for learning your primary cultural type. Think of it as a personality assessment for your cultural. You might ask, “Why is this important?” Well, it’s widely recognized that an awareness of basic culture types is essential for success in today’s globalized world. And, this is even more true when thinking about how to communicate the Gospel in the most effective, relevant way. The test is simple, can be used with groups, and there’s even a Group Discussion Guide you can download.
Awhile back I came across a great book that challenged my view of how I experienced the Gospel personally, as well as how I share it with others. “The 3D Gospel: Ministry in Guilt, Shame, and Fear Cultures” by Jayson Georges is a short, simple read with practical tips as well. In it, the author explains how most Westerners emphasize legal forgiveness of sins, but often don’t know how the Gospel connects to the rest of the world who seek honor or spiritual power. And, as my family read the book, we also recognized that even Westerners need to experience how the honor/shame and power/fear perspectives are part of the complete restoration Jesus wants to perform in all of us. As their website (www.honorshame.com/3dgospel) puts it, “In today’s globalized world, Christians need a three-dimensional gospel. Learn how the Bible speaks to cultures of guilt, shame, and fear, and enhance your cross-cultural ministry among the nations!” If you are sharing the Gospel in cross-cultural relationships, or you want to better understand how the Good News addresses shame and fear in your life, check out this great resource.
